Pure disappointment- no longer buying a house at St Mary’s because of this pub
We went on a Friday evening and it was fairly quiet. A few children in the bar area and it have very bright lights - not the welcoming place I’d hope for. Needs to invest in lamps and turn the main lights off.
I had st Mary’s lager which was very enjoyable.
We had pre-booked a meal in the restaurant and it was again very quiet - not a good sign at 7.30 on a Friday evening. There was one other young couple and our table and it was just a poor vibe.
The menu is odd. They have pies and if you get a eat pie you get it serve with chips and no veg whatsoever. If you want a cheese and potatoe pie you get it serve with green beans and no chips what so ever. The meat pies are £17.95 and the cheese and potato pie is £16.95. I asked if it would be possible to swap the green beans for chips to go with the cheese and onion pie - and was told that this would be impossible. I thought id misheard but was told it’s because the cheese pie was vegetarian so couldnt be serve with chips. I offered to pay £17.95 to make it the same price as the meet piebut was told the only way it would be possible was to pay an additional £5 for a portion of chips. I was not prepared to do that so just got the steak pie.
The steak pie arrives looking fairly grand but unfortunately the top inch was undercooked pastry and the meat inside was over cooked and tasted odd. Not terrible but not good. 4/10.
The chips were something else. They were very fat - larger than most wedges and were over cooked considerably - very dark on the outside, but not cooked enough on the inside. Very poor.
Other members of the party had fries with their meals and they were infinitely better (though whether they would swap chips for fries is maybe unlikely).
On the our way out there was a note on the door saying with immediate effect the pub will be closed, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. It doesn’t bode well for the future.
We decided not to progress with an offer on the house as one of the things we wanted was a pub in walking distance but realistically, this was not a nice place to have a beer.
It COULD be great - it’s a failure of the current management. They need to sort out the lighting, sort out the menu, bring the prices of the hotel rooms down (then they have more people staying and more revenue from those people). They also need to abandon the silly rules regarding cheese pie not going with chips!!

A little disappointment.
We had a dirty bath towel left behind the bathroom door the chairs in the room were ripped.
I could hear the fans all night and didnt sleep very well.
However the food was lovely, a little more experience than the other pubs in the area.

Good dining experience, amazing pies.
We had drinks at the bar and dinner in the restaurant. The menu is good, and their steak and ale or chicken and leek pies were amazing. Beautifully mashed potatoes, veg and additional gravy to die for.
The young lad serving was very good.
We repeated the dining experience a few days later with other visiting friends. This time, it was their turn for the pies, and they gave the same glowing reviews.
